COMBUSTION OPTIMIZATION

KEH classes are dedicated to the improvement of boiler operations to reduce operating cost and equipment failure.

KEH provides three programs accepted by the Maryland Department of the Environment as training in combustion optimization in accordance with COMAR 26-11-09.08-E and F. The course addresses much more than a discussion of combustion optimization as required by the regulation. It includes an explanation of the source of emissions with the normal operating activities to reduce emissions that also save on fuel.

Combustion Optimization and operating boilers to reduce emissions

A four hour class for up to 12 operators - $1,200* for first class, ADD $600 for another class for additional personnel on the same day, $800 for a repeat class on a consecutive day. Each operator will receive a color certificate for attending the course. On receipt of payment KEH will issue a letter certifying those individuals attended the course and copy it to MDE. Attending this course does not qualify an operator to perform combustion optimization.

NOW OFFERED ON LINE, $100 per operator. Employers choosing to submit more than ten opertors for training get a 10% discount.

Adjustment of boilers for Combustion Optimization

An eight hour class for up to 12 operators, $1,600* plus $200** per operator. Price includes EPA-340 (described below). This segment applies to boilers with simple parallel positioning controls burning gas or fuel oil. Add another $100 per operator for coal fired boilers. After each person demonstrates to KEH knowledge and skill adequate to safely perform combustion optimization a certificate is issued to that person stating he or she is qualified to perform combustion optimization. A letter certifying to the individual's qualifications will be sent to the employer with a copy to MDE.

Adjustment of Boiler Controls for Combustion Optimization

An eight hour class plus time for each operator, $2,100* plus $200** per operator. This training applies to boilers with full metering combustion controls firing gas and fuel oil plus oxygen trim. Add $100 per operator for coal fired boilers. Price includes EPA-340 (described below). After each person demonstrates to KEH knowledge and skill adequate to safely perform combustion optimization a certificate is issued to that person stating she or he is qualified to perform combustion optimization. A letter certifying to the individual's qualifications will be sent to the employer with a copy to MDE.

* Plus expenses for travel and living between the training site and Ken's new home in Port Saint Lucie Florida.

** Fees per operator cover individual review with each operator while actually performing the work in his or her boiler room using the owner's equipment for combustion analysis. Operator validation to be completed within three days of completion of the training. Each operator must demonstrate an understanding of the process of combustion optimization and its application to receive a certificate for adjusting boilers or controls. When KEH deems an operator incapable of performing the task safely that operator will receive a certificate for attending the course.

"EPA Combustion Efficiency Optimization Manual for Operators of Oil- and Gas-Fired Boilers."

This document, EPA-340, is available as a reproduction off microfiche from the government printing office but KEH has reproduced it and had it printed in a clean, legible format. The manual is included plus other documents with the two adjustment courses, however, anyone wishing to receive a pdf of the KEH reproduction need only e-mail a request to KEH.

The document explains how to adjust boilers for optimum combustion efficiency to reduce emissions. However, it requires experience, common sense and skill to apply the instructions safely. It does not include many procedures that KEH recommends as part of the activity of combustion optimization.
